Good Mong Kok Bakery is one of my favorite places to stop by whenever I'm in Chinatown. If I spot a short line, you can count on me being there trying to get my grub on. The value here is incredible. You can fill up for under twenty dollars and still walk away with leftovers. It is one of those places where the food is satisfying, affordable, and fast. One of my go-to items is the soy sauce chow mein. For just four dollars, the portion is beyond generous. They call it a small, but to me it feels like a large. The noodles are lightly seasoned and have a good chew to them. I like to take mine home and crisp it up a little in a pan to give it some extra texture, but it is great straight out of the box too. My all-time favorite is the fried glutinous rice dumpling balls, also known as ham sui gok. These are truly dangerous in the best way. This location does them right because they are always golden and crispy with no air pockets. They have a crispy outer layer with the inside being chewy and satisfying with its savory meat filling. Every bite is packed with flavor and they always get the texture just right. I rarely leave without at least one of these in my bag. The menu has a wide variety of classic dim sum items. You can try different buns, dumplings, rice noodle rolls, and more without spending a lot. It is a great spot for tasting your way through everything until you find your personal favorite. Even if you are new to dim sum, this is a welcoming place to explore. Lines do get long during peak hours, but the staff work quickly and keep everything moving. The ladies inside hustle with a system that is efficient and smooth, and they are always kind even when the place is packed. It is impressive to watch and adds to the charm of the experience. Parking in Chinatown can be hectic, so I recommend using public transportation or parking a little farther out and walking in. Once you get there, it is more than worth it. Oh yeah.. hype is real. We went on a weekday around 1030ish.. no line. Fast and easy to order! We got the shumai and yup...it's goooood We also got pork bun, sesame balls, har gow.. you can taste the flavors! Parking is difficult..don't park in front . It's a loading zone and there's a man walking around ticketing! It's a small shop but it's good for takeout only
Delectable dim sum! [San Francisco CA] Well, gosh darn it... why did I only discover this dim sum bakery just today. I've been to Chinatown many times. There are so many good Chinese bakeries basically offering most of the same items that you can hardly go wrong in which bakery you choose. While waiting in line at another popular specialty shop on Ross Alley we checked Yelp for the closest bakery nearby... one came up just around the corner on Stockton Street and somehow we missed it and found Good Mong Kok Bakery instead. The line wrapped around the sidewalk so we knew it was good. Once you're inside that's when you start placing your order. When it was finally our turn our eyes couldn't get enough of the delightful offerings. We were just pointing at almost everything LoL! We took home an order of shrimp dumplings (Har Gow), Shumai (2 orders), potstickers (they were on sale at 5-pcs for $4), steam BBQ pork buns and egg rolls... it came out to $22+ plus tax and 3% CC charge. They accept Credit Cards but they charge 3% and they do let the customers know this so you're not surprised with the add'l charges. There was a language barrier and it was difficult to understand the ladies... we just used our fingers to point at all the dim sum we wanted. LoL! Get your dim sum and bakery items here. I get the hype!! Best BBQ pork bun I've ever had. I went on a Tuesday afternoon and the line was way shorter compared to the weekend. The steamed BBQ pork bun (4/5) was fresh and was great, however, I prefer the baked BBQ pork bun (5/5). Now when I got the baked bun, it was not warm and fresh like their steamed bun. I took a bite of it and was disappointed. So I brought it home and warmed it up and that was wayyyy better. 1000x I will come back and order a bunch of the baked BBQ pork buns to eat at home. The chicken shu mai (4/5) was good overall but it had peas inside (not a fan of peas). Flavor was good and honestly it didn't taste much different from a pork shu mai. The har gow (4/5) was good as well but the shrimp is a bit smaller than what I'm used to. Everyone has to try this place!!
Pork Shi Mai, shrimp dumplings, pineapple BBQ pork are the ones to get again! The most surprising the pineapple bun! Crispy slightly sweet dough with BBQ pork inside. We were lucky they still had them. The line is intimidating but worth the wait. They take CC's.
